The Arachnids (515pm)

At first glance, ..The Arachnids.. may appear to be your standard dark-tinged, eight legged creature looking to ride the coat tails of the third Spider-Man film. Well firstly, it was the worst of the three and secondly, anyone trying to associate the emo scene where Toby Maguire flicks his hair around like a swing dancer with The Arachnids' music will be sorely mistaken. .. The fact that there are only eight legs in The Arachnids is purely coincidental. The music is what will inject you with dancing venom and wrap cobwebs around your soul ... (too much?!?) .. Part Jamiroquai dance, part Dead Kennedys intensity, part Parliament soul, part The Darkness vocal stylings, part New Order synth circa 1980's, The Arachnids revel in the challenge of defining a music genre. .. The first half of 2010 has already seen The Arachnids tour twice through Victoria, plus an array of fantastic shows around their native Brisbane. The Arachnids have played at some great venues including: ..The Zoo, Ric's, Uber, The Globe, Hi Fi .. (VIC), ..The Espy.. (VIC) and ..Revolver ..(VIC). .. and finally, you can see The Arachnids live and make the comparisons for yourself at the West End Twilight Markets. Go to www.thearachnids.com to find out more.

Sandi Favretto (630pm)

Sandi is a singer/songwriter with rich vocals having been described as ‘Smooth Chocolate’ or ‘Coffee’ tones. Singing a range of acoustic/folk with a hint of jazz, blues and indie style music, Sandi’s songs run deep with messages of transformation and emotions as well as world changes, often resonating well with the listener. Sandi performs a mix of her acoustic original music and covers at café...s, bars and markets in and around Brisbane. Originally from Melbourne, Sandi is currently living and performing in Brisbane, occasionally performing in her home town (and a rare treat this weekend at WETM). Sandi is a fan of a variety in styles of music, being influenced by artists of most genres. Sandi Has been performing since her teens; began singing with her sister at Weddings as well as being part of the 'Robert Stolz Chorale' when she was classically trained. After the Chorale, Sandi went on to sing in Rock Cover bands, trios and experimental/alternative bands. Being inspired to write a song whenever she had the opportunity, Sandi is now performing her original songs as a solo artist with a CD on it's way. To get a sneak preview before Saturday... check her out http://www.myspace.com/sandifav

Jane Cameron (745pm)

PictureSinger, songwriter, actor, and more...  Jane will be bringing her bluesy approach on the ukulele to audiences around Brisbane and especially to the West End Twilight Markets. A prolific local sonstress, the power, depth and warmth in her voice have drawn comparisons with Joni Mitchell, Beth Gibbons and Janis Joplin. Ranging from catchy pop folk to dark moody blues, her songs are rich in narrative, building characters and stories that are both familiar and fresh, humourous and heart-breaking. She explores and exposes the foibles of the human heart with a gentle compassion that embraces her audience – sharing truths that hurt, laughter that heals and hope that persists through it all..

For more info on when you can catch any of jane's solo, duo or trio gigs, check out her website www.janecameron.com

ARCHIVE JUN9: ALAN BOYLE, District of East, Donnelle Brooks, Dinkum Bohos.

Alan Boyle (745pm)

We have had him once before but you might have missed his epic, first ever, balcony TV performance at WETM. He was born under the weeping Irish stars, and wandered the earth for years before falling asleep at the gates of Australia, where a family of possums took him in and dressed the wounds on his fingertips... Building a reputation as a powerful live performer on the national emerging-artist scene, and supporting some of Australia's top musicians and visiting international acts, he has been selected as the recipient of the 2009 Billy Thorpe Scholarship Award by Arts QLD and the Thorpe family. Songs off his second EP, "OXYGEN" have been QSong nominated, short-listed in the Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition and finalist in the 2011 International Songwriting Competition. He was also a Performance finalist in the 2011 Telstra Road To Tamworth. Alan is currently recording his debut album for release in early 2012. www.alanboylemusic.com

THE ARCHIVE

May 12: MAL WEBB, Mamajuju, Baron Field, Jackson Dunn

MAL WEBB (4pm & 5pm - Workshop & Perf.)

Around the world and into your brain, vocal adventurer, multi-instrumentist and looping beatboxing songwriter Mal Webb sings his songs about all manner of stuff, using all sorts of vocal techniques, guitar, mbira, slide trumpet, trombone, chromatic harmonica and a loop recording pedal called Derek. It's a lip to lung journey through the physics, physiology and phrivolity of all the sounds a face can make. Sideways yodelling, beatbox, harmonics, throat singing, uvular fluttering, advanced clapping. He's like Bobby McFerrin, Aphex Twin and Cole Porter playing scrabble. Ebulliently eclectic. Nefariously varied. Family fun free from facile frippery. "You're a freak!"-Ani DiFranco.

A founding member of the Oxo Cubans, Sock and Totally Gourdgeous, Mal did all the music for the Lano and Woodley TV show and Wogs Out of Work, played mbira and sang "Eagle Rock" with Ross Wilson on John Safran's Music Jamboree on SBS and has done a few spots on Spicks and Specks (ABCTV).

mamajuju

The vivacious Juju on vocals, ukulele & blues harp with Sugar Cane Slim on guitar, travel the crossroads through Blues, Jazz, and Americana from the 1920s till now. Put your ear to the gramophone for interpretive jazz standards, hollerin' blues and whatever else takes their fancy with fine fingertyle guitar work in standard and open tunings.

BARON FIELD (7pm)

When Brisbane folk rock band The Big Brass Bed disbanded in 2006, singer-songwriter Adrian Waters moved into the piano player's house while Browndog went to Japan. Money was tight but there was a guitar, four walls, and a sometime cigarette supply.

The songs, when they came, came in fits and bursts, line by line, little by little. And, in a few short months, restricted to writing in the gaps, Waters jagged a couple of contenders, maybe not even two. But the ball had rolled.

He began the solo shows, played markets and poetry festivals along with the beer joints and drew from a past that years before saw him busking the city streets of Brisbane, Darwin and Melbourne. A past that took him across Asia, from Dili to Dhaka, playing to anyone who'd listen and more than a few who walked the other way.

Yet, what emerged was if not a street performer than a creative, intuitive songwriter. Re- enlisting in that winter of 2006, Waters wrote his way through a handful of cast-offs before delivering the first version of a tune called 'Month Of Sundays'. This song, and those that followed proved the cornerstone for a fresh approach, a new collection of recordings and a new act to look out for- Baron Field. See more at http://baronfield.bandcamp.com/

JACKSON DUNN (8pm)

Jackson Dunn is a rare find in a musician - capable of inciting such a wide variety of emotions and feelings in his music. He takes his listeners through a journey from thumping, raw, exciting slide guitar/blues & roots to beautiful, gentle, acoustic singer-songwriter ballads.

Jackson Dunn's music and life is centered directly on the ocean. It's life force, energy and ever-changing tides are the themes of his music and it pervades his life. He lives almost right on the sand at the Gold Coast in Surfer's Paradise, and his new single, Yuni's Song, carries that influence in it.

A Lifelong Passion, Jackson credits his Philippino-born Mother for his introduction to the world of Music. Jackson's path has been forged so far by playing a vibrant live show - he has played alongside John Butler Trio, Dallas Frasca, Ash Grunwald, Jack Johnson, Transvaal Diamond Syndicate and Jebediah.

MAY 12: MARIO KART TOURNAMENT and...

MATT NELSON, QLD SHAKESPEARE ENSEMBLE,  Bauque Australis and The Folding Kind

Matt Nelson (8pm)

Matt Nelson

Matt Nelson, as a soloist, possesses a rare ability to routinely thrill, surprise and captivate an audience. He has made an art of capturing the attention and admiration of audiences of all walks. At almost every show, Nelson is asked to join a band or give guitar lessons. Phone numbers go flying about. At least one woman will loudly exclaim "oh my God!" The owner of the venue excitedly demands that he return soon. A Matt Nelson show may well be one of the few times that you'll see 'metal-heads' and grandmothers standing shoulder to shoulder.

QLD SHAKESPEARE ENSEMBLE (6pm & 7pm)

Shakespeare's Shorts are fast and funny half-hour versions of the original scripts, delivered with QSE's trademark clarity and accessibility, and featuring trained, experienced actors. Each of the Shorts also features gentle audience participation to get you into the action.

The Half-Hour Hamlet takes out all the procrastination - the tragedy is performed in 20 minutes, then in 7 minutes, and again in just 3.

Express Macbeth spins the murder, betrayal and madness of the Scottish Play into a tale of fun, frivolity and... well, madness!

Instant Romeo & Juliet turns the tragedy of the star-crossed lovers into a high-paced comedy with plenty of wooden-sword-buckling.

Come along Saturday and experience the Shorts first-hand... otherwise, visit the Shakespeare Ensemble (http://www.qldshakespeare.org/) to get them right in your living room!

Ofa Fanaika Aka Captain Dreamboat (630pm)

Ofa Fanaika is from Lapaha in Tonga. Her husky yet clear tenor and skilful use of tremolo lend themselves well to sultry ballads, and she’s also more than capable of using her impressive vocal strength and experimentation with lyrical assonance to ‘bring the funk’ during her signature party numbers. Her undeniable charisma and stage presence provide rallying points for her reputation, with whom her dedicated fan base feel a strong connection with and this keeps them coming back for more time and again. She leads for Brisbane based Reggae/Dub/Funk band Chocolate Strings and has toured extensively in Australia and New Zealand. Ofa Fanaika is now starting a new solo project known as Captain Dreamboat. Although its only in its early stages, her solo performances are revelled amongst her community in West End. The converted are now bringing more and more friends to her shows to glare at her spectacle. A well known name, Ofa introduces listeners to the songs that have influenced her in her younger years and also to the beautiful ‘Polynesian Soul’ that Ofa classifies her music as. Check it out for yourself .......................... www.myspace.com/chocolatestrings

Bremen Town (515pm)

Brememn Town Musician, play a lot of music and have covered alot of ground. There albums to date include: 'Silent Arrows' from 2005 and No one Is holding a Gun To Your Head (Songs to Run to) from 2008. They herald from 'no scene' scence that has no specific geographical location and where musicians play anything that is required, at any time, with anyone and learn their art on the fly... but sometimes also accept that lables of an adventurous avant-blues trio well versed in experimentation and artistry. Brisbane's Bremen Town Musician have consistently titillated and inspired audiences across the globe with their eclectic blend of spoken-word performance, texture-driven experimentation and honest, evocative songwriting. The creative vehicle of Brisbane transdisciplinary artist Marisa Allen; a journeywoman musician, poet and street performer, Allen has spent the past fifteen years exploring and refining her craft throughout Australia, the United Kingdom and Iceland via surplus of unique and surprising opportunities – from performing as an improvising violinist for the governor of Reyjavik to releasing a book of poetry (2007's Fire in Your Head). Allen's idiosyncratic vision, meanwhile, is articulately fleshed out by veteran musicians Arron Bool and Mayuresh Sathe. Bool's skills as a multi-instrumentalist have decorated recordings by countless Melbourne ensembles over the past ten years and expand upon Allen's innate flair for texture with eloquence and grace while Sathe's accomplished percussion (which encompasses both drums and less conventional instruments like tablas) lends a nuanced sense of gravitas to Allen's songwriting and an unpredictable edge to the trio's live improvisations.

STEVE GRADY (630pm)

Car.jpg

There’s certainly no shortage of singer/songwriters doing the rounds these does – but few hit you where it counts quite like Brisbane’s Steve Grady. Like many of his contemporaries, Grady has over the years absorbed classic songwriters from likes of Neil Finn to Ryan Adams. But mimicking those that have gone before is not Grady’s style.

When you listen to his songs, you can hear there’s something very personal going on. It’s a spiritual depth that could have something to do with his younger years on a mission in Papua New Guinea where Gospel music made its mark. It’s not an easy thing to describe, but Grady says that with his songs, he’s looking beyond himself and talking about some of life’s grey areas. This is an artist certainly not scared of tackling the biggest, and sometimes most complex, issues.

Jimi Beavis (745pm)

Jimi Beavis is all class and he is back at WETM! The gentleman giant of the Brisbane Blues scene. Standing at 6'2" he towers over the members of his band, but still stands in the shadows of the blues giants from whom he draws his inspiration.

Jimi’s original songs draw upon the old school rhythms that gave the blues their good time dancibility. After all the blues is the roots. And yet the songs remain relevant, contemporary and irresistible to live audiences when Jimi delivers them in his inimitable charismatic way.

“Jimi Beavis delivers a raw, sweaty set that some find sexy, some find magnetic, and which no-one forgets in a hurry…” -- blues promoter, Paul Robinson, Juke Joint Productions..

Previously the front man of good-time blues act, Jimi Beavis and the 385s, 2010 has been a year of rebirth for Jimi. His release Throwing It All Away was all about discarding the old and carving a new niche for himself in his vocal and harmonica sound.

For the new project, Jimi is working with a core band, consisting of Japanese guitar prodigy Hiro Takenaka, Shelley Osland on bass guitar or double bass and Geoff Parsons on drums. Hiro played with 2007 Blues Association of South-East Queensland (BASEQ) Performers of the Year, Natural Ball, Shelley has recently returned from an overseas tour with Brisbane blues maestro Mojo Webb, and Geoff has played for Bo Diddley.

Jimi won the BASEQ’s Performer of the Year in 2009, which took him to the Australian Festival of Blues in 2010. Jimi played the Sunshine Coast Blues Festival in 2008 and 2009, Woodford Folk Festival in 2009/2010 and the Brisbane Blues Festival in 2010. He also plays regular gigs at West End’s Lock and Load and Brisbane’s home of the Blues the Jubilee Hotel.

2011's plans include releasing and touring his new EP No Need To Deny It (recorded with band), out in May, and writing new songs that will break down expectations by not consistently using the 12 bar blues format.

Seafarer (515pm)

Brisbane songstress Eleanor Angel is a stunning vocalist who weaves elements of classical voice, jazz and folk with a sense of bittersweet introspection and poetic optimism.

Her arrangements bear an elegant simplicity, structured around the fingerstyle guitar of her live performances and augmented by lush, spacious string arrangements and soft percussion.

To top it off, this weekend Eleanor will be at the West End Twilight Markets, but be combining her powers in her new duo Seafarer, featuring Alex Bell. Another magic night is just around the corner it seems.

March 10: David Flower (745pm)

Dave began his musical journey as front man for the popular outfit 'The Feel', a progressive dance-friendly acoustic groove band, playing festivals including The Woodford Folk Festival, Winter Solstice, and The Story Bridge Festival. They also supported the likes of Wendy Matthews, Skunkhour, Afro Dizzi Act and The ToothFaeries. The band morphed to 'Mad Flower', and the EP Curious World was released in 2000, with tracks 'Ode to the Rising Sea' and 'The Message' getting high rotation on ABC Radio. Dave's self-titled album 'David Flower' was released in 2007, catching the attention of Triple J with the politically cheeky 'Cheney's Pie' and 'Half Price Soul Sale'. Dave's song writing reflects a fascination with society and the culture of human relationships. His intrigue with the consequences for individuals living in the 'world as we know it', makes for very poetic lyrics. He has a distinctive and stirring voice, and a natural timing in his delivery that resonates deep with the listener. His storytelling is often tongue-in-cheek; always in the right spirit; unapologetically feisty; and often rather pretty. Check out dave and the band here:

Bec Laughton (630pm)

Bec Laughton, a quirky young songbird who has been coined as a “vocal powerhouse” with “lion lungs”. Returning fresh from Europe beware the cheeky soul/pop concoction of this fiery songstress.
Released in October 2010 her latest EP ‘At First Sight’ was laid down at 301 Studios Byron Bay with Producer/Engineer Anthony Lycenko (Pete Murray, Cold Chisel, George). Mastered in New York by Tom Coyne (Maxwell) at Sterling Sound the recording features the young dame’s too hot to trot 10-piece suite. Also involved in the production and featuring on the song ‘Loop de Loop’ are the Spacifix, award winning funk/soul/reggae band from New Zealand.

Bec took out the winning song for her track ‘Holy Love’ and came close with her highly commended ‘Sensation’, both of which feature on the EP ‘At First Sight’. ‘Holy Love’ also received international marketing interest and may be heard soon as the theme for one of Germany’s biggest phone companies.

The young songbird has roots in jazz being trained at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Raised as a theatre orphan she has also dabbled in musical theatre for over a decade. Appearing in lights in 1998 the young singer/actor/dancer landed her first lead role in a major production at 16 years. Playing Dorothy in the motown musical The Wiz she received rave reviews and the nickname “lion lungs”.

LION ISLAND (4pm)

Ladies and Gentelmen, the West End Twilight Markets presents: Lion Island. Think... long lost overs for melodies, grappling at one another ferociously, and with a need and desire that makes the harmonies (and a somewhat skyward bound sound) feel as though each line is grappling to be heard before its time is up. Many ask, are they folk, are they indie rock, maybe they are a jazz group gone underground... but Lion Island have probably created there own blend of all of the above into something new, something upliting and a little bit cosmic to say the least. LI have only the one EP to their name, but it seems like only a matter of time before you wish you had the first one as a collectors item.

SWINGSET (515pm)

Formally known as The Tony Stanza's and The Friendly Sunday Jazz Band, the Swing Set hark from the very deepest pockets of West End's cultural jazz doo-whup rainforest. These crooners are regular performers at Blackstar Coffee and they have picked up there suitcases and drumstickto shuffle curiously around the corner to share their tones and tunes with us at the West End Twilight Markets. If you like to boogie or tap your foot like a well-dressed 1920's gangster.... this just might be your ticket!

KOOII (7pm)

Kooii are a band pushing boundaries in contemporary Australian music. Their compelling fusion of Afrobeat, reggae and world rhythms have earned them a glowing reputation, both on record and in the live arena. Their music brings together soulful vocals, three part harmony and a super tight rhythm section in an ageless and familiar sound.

Over the last eight years, Kooii have toured extensively throughout Australia and New Zealand, gathering a devoted following along the way. Their travels have seen them on the big stage at festivals including Woodford, Reggaetown, Island Vibe and Kuranda Roots, supporting the likes of Blue King Brown, The Cat Empire and The Beautiful Girls.

On stage, Kooii deliver a dynamic live show made for dancing, delving from the hypnotic depths of reggae rhythms into the pulsating groove of Afrobeat. The intrinsic understanding shared between these talented musicians allows for colourful and explosive improvisation. The music is free-flowing, uplifting, heart-warming and will leave you relishing every last drop.

Kooii’s song “One Step” recently took out ‘Song of the Year’ in the Blues/Roots category of QMusic’s annual awards. The song is taken from the album “In This Life” (2010), a stunning album that follows their landmark debut “Beads On A String” (2005).

Both albums are independent releases available now through Vitamin Records.

Rivercity Steel Band (4pm):

The Rivercity Steel Band is a community steel band playing Caribbean style music. The origin of steel bands lies in Trinidad where the discovery that oil drums could be hammered and tuned to make musical instruments was made. The basic instrument is the steel pan, or drum, which is made in a range of different sizes to match the range of notes of the instruments of an orchestra. Formerly associated with poverty, the steel pan is now officially recognised as the National Instrument of Trinidad and Tobago and has millions of players and followers throughout the world.

The Rivercity Steel Band Incorporated was formed in 2009 as a not-for-profit community band whose aims are to: provide opportunities for community members to learn a musical instrument and to be part of a band, increase community awareness and knowledge of the steel band and Caribbean culture and learn and perform steel band music. The band performs regularly at various locations around Southeast Queensland including Brisbane City Council parks and CBD locations, local markets, festivals, and school events. Recent engagements include the Queensland Multicultural festival and the Ipswich Festival.

BARON FIELD (515pm)

JACKSON DUNN (630pm)

Matt Nelson (515pm)

December 17: EMMA DEAN

It has been a really exciting year for the West End Twilight Markets and there really is no better way to finish than with one of our favourites... Emma Dean!

This Saturday, as a special Christmas present for our beautiful community, WETM proudly presents Emma Dean. She will be gracing our stage between 730pm - 830pm, with a Duo performance featuring Nathan Moore on the guitar. The best thing is, Emma can't wait either, saying "I'm very excited about the show - my final of 2011. I want to go out with a BANG!"

It has been a whirlwind year for Emma... and it started at quite a pace. She was named in The New York Post's (TNYP) Top 10 artists to be watched in 2011. On Dec 3 2010 TNYP could not have said it better when they described Emma as a "Singer, songwriter and self proclaimed ringmaster Emma Dean is a hobobag full of crazy pills. Like the really awesome hallucinogenic kind. Driven by her child-like imagination and bouncy exuberance, her new album “Dr Dream and the Imaginary Pop Cabaret” has a title that describes it’s sound with sheer perfection." (Full Review)

Her latest alblum has also received rave reviews, including the ear of Brisbanes Marquee Music Journalist Noel Mengel (The Courier Mail, Jan 2011) who writes "....It's just right. Move over Rufus and Tori. You have company."

If you want to purchase Emma's album head to: www.emmadean.com

Otherwise... just come down and get her to sign it for xmas!

SIMON ANDREW (DADDY LOOPS):

Simon Andrews has more than five years of performing experience, as well as a Bachelor in Jazz Performance. Based in Brisbane, Simon became despondent with a lack of like-minded musicians. Deciding to go it alone, he wasn’t willing to sacrifice the depth and complex musical interaction that comes from a multi-instrumental ensemble. So he acquired a technical wonder, the Loop Pedal. Since 2010, he’s directed his musical attention to creating complex and captivating songs, as a live performance, which will never exist in the same way again. Thus, Daddy Loops was born.
